Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the art and science of getting noticed on Google, Bing and other search engines. I understand how to optimise websites and have achieved this for myself and my clients.

My SEO products and services are described below, but first a little about SEO and how to choose what to buy.

A Little About SEO

SEO is anything you do to improve your visibility in search engine results. Meaning in ‘organic search’ results as opposed to the ‘paid search’ adverts that appear alongside search results.

There are a lot of things we can do to achieve this for your website. For instance, choosing to target particular phrases (Keywords) that your customers might type into Google when looking for what you offer. Ensuring those keywords are visible to the search engines (On-Page SEO), using them in the right areas of the page, and the HTML tags which are not displayed (titles, headings, anchor text and URLs, to name but a few). But this is just the start!

Then there’s Content, Articles, Directories, Link Building. And…

in short, there are lots of possibilities so the most important thing about SEO is to focus effort where it will be most productive for your particular business.

Now you have a choice to make, because there are two ways to achieve a high search engine position: on merit (‘white-hat’), or by manipulation (‘black-hat’). Both approaches require expert knowledge, neither is easy, though the latter is attractive because it is a short-cut.

Black-Hat Or White-Hat?

In general, ‘black-hat’ means short-cuts by manipulation, and ‘white-hat’ means merit plus co-operation. So what’s wrong with cheating if it gets you what you want?

Well, scruples aside, manipulation is a bad idea for any business that is investing for the long term (e.g. in a domain, website authority and brand).

This is because the search engines don’t want to be manipulated! Search engine’s want to provide the best results for each search, or people won’t use them, and they will stop making money. So they put a massive effort into stopping this ‘spamming’ of their results by websites that don’t deserve to be there

So if you choose to manipulate them (‘black-hat’), you risk them noticing and penalising you, either by tweaking the algorithm to stop the tricks you are using working, or even banning you from their results altogether. Suddenly all the effort and money invested in manipulation will have been for nothing. You will either have to start from scratch, or clean up your act and persuade the search engine to look at you again.

My approach to SEO is merit and co-operation (‘white-hat’) which means that I focus my activity on two goals:

  1. Ensuring your website is worthy of showing in search results for the things your customers want, and
  2. Making this apparent to search engines.

Be aware that search engines are timid creatures, and that gaining their trust with SEO takes time, but with a sensible, consistent approach to SEO, they will reward you with lots of potential customers or clients.

Can I Get On The First Page Of Google?

Maybe. But don’t trust someone who promises you page one of Google. Because while anyone can get you on page one for a worthless search, anything valuable will depend on the competition. Don’t just trust me on this, look what Google’s own experts say, for example:

Then ask yourself: Why would someone try to sell a quality SEO service with a very tempting claim which Google say is impossible?

Restructuring Website Functionality

You may wish to implement larger scale improvements designed to enhance the overall effectiveness of your website, at the same time as improving SEO:

  • revised website structure (e.g. to include a better ‘landing page’, or add useful content)
  • improved navigation (e.g. menu style and implementation, a ‘breadcrumb’ bar)
  • to add functionality such as a blog, online booking or ordering, shop, forum etc.

If you want larger scale SEO-compliant website work, I provide this based on the popular WordPress website software, so your website will need to be running on WordPress (or a similar CMS such as Joomla or Drupal etc.). This is a good choice because WordPress websites are cheap and easy to maintain, even by yourself, and are easy to add functionality to—which is why I recommend them.

If you don’t yet have a website or want to convert to WordPress (which makes your website cheaper and easy to maintain—even by yourself), I can do this for you. I’ll set-up your WordPress website from scratch, or using the content from your existing website if you have one.

If you are already on WordPress you can pick from a range of WordPress website add-on options, and be confident that any features I add are ready optimised for SEO. A pre-requisite for business websites.

SEO Takes Time To Produce Results

Don’t expect search engines to suddenly put you at the top of their results page. Your SEO value accumulates over time, and patient sustained work based around providing genuine value to search engine users will be rewarded with better search results and more customers.

There is a lot you can be doing, too much to do all at once, and that isn’t a good idea anyway because…

search engines prefer websites that change regularly over time, so you will do better if you spread the work over time.

Measurement & Review

Its also important to measure the results, and therefore the progress and effectiveness of your SEO so you can discover what is working and what is not. I recommend that you monitor the results as you go, using analytics (to monitor visitors and what they searched for), search engine results for relevant keywords (SERP monitoring) and asking each new customer how they found you.
