Secure browsing means that information transferred between your computer and facebook will be encrypted and so can’t be intercepted and read by a hacker or anyone else (e.g. over a wireless network, or as it passes over the internet).
To Enable Secure Browsing:
- Log into facebook
- Choose “Account Settings” from the “Account” menu (top right).
- Scroll down to “Account Security” and click “change”
- Check “Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) whenever possible”
- While here, also check “Send me an email”
Your settings should look like this:
I recommend you check “Send me an email” so that if anyone logs in from a different computer you will be notified. If this happens and it wasn’t you, its an early warning that gives you a chance to act quickly and limit the damage. If this happens, check your email address hasn’t been changed and change your password, or ask facebook for help.
There is a slight performance penalty for enabling secure browsing but you probably won’t notice, so try it out—most computers these days will be fine.
